Artist Ruth Carll established Traveling Muse Studio as a means for exploring the world around her. Her long career as a botanist and her love of nature centered her for many years. However, she always felt like she had an artist inside of her that needed to find its way out. That way out was a drawing class. Since then Ruth has explored various types of drawing and painting as well as her colorful, abstract fiber art.

Trying to establish myself as an artist had a road block that I hadn't expected - funding. The cost of paper, wood, framing and supplies was far more than I anticipated.

While in a drawing class using standard graphite pencils, the instructor introduced pen and ink as a "just so you've tried it" activity. I loved it! The high contrast and true black of the ink spoke to me. And, as a botanist by trade, the detail and scientific illustration look of the work has a strong appeal to my left brain. Since then, I have mostly worked with this medium. Much of my work focuses on sea life. Pen and ink work is very different from pencil as it is an accumulation of tiny marks - dots and dashes - that create the shapes and shading. It is time-consuming but also meditative. I hope you enjoy these works. I have many others as well so if there is a creature that you are looking for, please reach out.
